Shrujana

Shrujana is a concept primarily associated with the Jain tradition, referring to the sacred texts and scriptures of Jainism. These texts are considered to be the teachings of the Tirthankaras, the enlightened spiritual teachers of Jainism. The collection of Shrujana is vast and encompasses a wide range of philosophical, ethical, and cosmological doctrines.

The Shrujana are traditionally divided into various categories, including Agamas, Upangas, and other ancillary texts. The Agamas are believed to be the direct discourses of Mahavira, the last Tirthankara. These scriptures form the core of Jain philosophy and practice, outlining principles such as ahimsa (non-violence), anekantavada (multi-sidedness), and aparigraha (non-possession).

The study and preservation of Shrujana are of paramount importance for Jains. Monks, nuns, and scholars dedicate their lives to understanding and transmitting these sacred writings. The texts are written in various Prakrit languages, with Ardhamagadhi being a significant one. Over centuries, commentaries and sub-commentaries have been added to further elaborate on the original teachings.
