Shrimpprawns
Shrimpprawns is an informal term for decapod crustaceans commonly sold for consumption, encompassing both shrimp and prawns. Scientifically, shrimp and prawns refer to two related groups within the order Decapoda: shrimp are typically in the infraorder Caridea, while prawns are in the suborder Dendrobranchiata. They share a similar general form—elongated bodies with a segmented abdomen and a chelate first pair of legs—but differ in certain internal features such as gill structure and leg composition. Because of regional usage, the two terms are often used interchangeably in markets and menus, and the distinction is mostly of taxonomic interest.
Distribution and habitat: Shrimpprawns occur in most oceans and many freshwater systems, from estuaries to deep
Ecology and life cycle: Most species are omnivorous or detritivorous, with some large prawns acting as predators.
Fisheries and aquaculture: Shrimpprawns are among the most important seafoods worldwide, obtained from both wild fisheries
Human use and terminology: Regional naming conventions influence how people refer to shrimp and prawns. In
