A chelate is a type of coordination complex in which a single multidentate ligand binds to a metal ion at two or more donor sites, creating one or more rings that include the metal atom. The ligand, often called a chelating agent or chelator, wraps around the metal to form a stable, internally bonded structure. The term chelate derives from the Greek word for claw, reflecting how the ligand grasped the metal.

Common chelating agents include ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid derivatives such as EGTA. These ligands are polydentate, meaning they can donate multiple pairs of electrons to the metal. Chelation is contrasted with binding by simple monodentate ligands that attach at a single site.

The chelate effect refers to the tendency for chelate complexes to be thermodynamically more stable than similar complexes formed with equivalent monodentate ligands. This increased stability arises from entropy gains and the enthalpic advantages of multiple bonds and ring formation, leading to higher formation constants for many metal ions.

Applications are wide-ranging. In agriculture, chelates such as Fe-EDTA and Fe-DTPA improve micronutrient availability in soils. In medicine, chelating agents are used for heavy-metal poisoning (e.g., EDTA, dimercaprol, penicillamine) and in treating excess iron or copper. In industry and environmental science, chelators help remove metals, stabilize products, and aid in water treatment. Naturally, organisms produce chelators, such as siderophores, to secure essential metals.
