Showd

Showd is a term used in speculative and fictional contexts to denote a lightweight data-display protocol and accompanying software component designed to render structured information in user interfaces. Because there is no standardized specification or widely adopted project named "showd" in real-world technology, the term is used across separate hypothetical implementations.

The name is formed from "show" and "display" and is sometimes expanded in fiction as "Show Data" or "Showable Objects Display." In design writing, showd commonly refers to a renderer that decouples data from presentation so that developers can swap layouts without changing underlying data models.

In a representative fictional design, a showd system consists of a daemon process called showd and a client library. The daemon accepts data in a JSON-like schema and exposes a display API that renders content through templated components. It favors modular templates, stateless rendering, and caching to enable responsive interfaces and easy theme switching.

Imagined use cases include live dashboards, digital signage, museum or gallery kiosks, and lightweight web widgets. The concept echoes real-world patterns such as content-management workflows, templating engines, and rendering pipelines, making it a convenient shorthand for discussions about data-driven UI and the separation of concerns between data and presentation.

Status: Showd remains a speculative term used in design fiction and theoretical proposals rather than a concrete, deployed technology.
