Shouldering

Shouldering refers to the act of carrying a load on the shoulder or, in firearm use, bringing a gun up to the shoulder for aiming. The term is used across manual handling, shooting, sport-related techniques, and metaphorical language.

In manual handling, shouldering describes lifting or carrying heavy items such as logs, sacks, or containers by resting them on the shoulder. The load is balanced along the upper body, and effectiveness relies on proper stance, leg drive, and core stability to reduce strain and injury.

In firearms practice, to shoulder a rifle means placing the stock against the shoulder, positioning the cheek to the stock, and aligning the sights with the eye. A stable posture, correct grip, and a consistent cheek weld help improve accuracy and control. Shouldering is a fundamental skill in hunting, military, and sport-shooting contexts.
