Shimogamo

Shimogamo refers to a district in the Sakyo Ward of Kyoto, Japan. It is most famously known for the Shimogamo Shrine, one of Kyoto's oldest and most significant Shinto shrines. The shrine, officially named Kamo Shrine, is divided into two main complexes: the upper shrine (Kamigamo Shrine) and the lower shrine (Shimogamo Shrine), with Shimogamo being the older of the two.

The Shimogamo Shrine is dedicated to the Kamo deities and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto. The shrine is set within the Tadasu no Mori, a primeval forest that has been preserved for centuries and serves as a sacred space. The annual Aoi Matsuri festival, one of Kyoto's three major festivals, is a highlight of the shrine's calendar, featuring a grand procession.

Beyond the shrine, the Shimogamo area is a residential neighborhood characterized by its greenery and relatively peaceful atmosphere. It is well-connected by public transport, making it accessible for residents and tourists alike.
