Kamigamo

Kamigamo is a district located in the northern part of Kyoto, Japan. It is primarily known for being the location of Kamigamo Shrine, one of Kyoto's oldest and most significant Shinto shrines. The shrine, officially named Kamo-wakeikazuchi Shrine, is dedicated to the god of thunder and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The area around Kamigamo Shrine retains a more rural and less developed character compared to the bustling city center of Kyoto. The Kamo River flows through the district, and its banks are often used for recreation. Historically, Kamigamo was an important administrative and religious center. The shrine has a long history of imperial patronage and played a crucial role in the development of Kyoto.
