Shevardnadze
Eduard Amvrosiyevich Shevardnadze (Georgian: ედუარდ შვარდნაძე; 1928–2014) was a Georgian and Soviet politician who played a key role in late Soviet and post-Soviet politics. He rose through the ranks of Georgia’s Communist Party, serving as First Secretary of the Georgian Communist Party from 1972 to 1985. In 1985 he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Soviet Union, a post he held until 1990, during Mikhail Gorbachev’s reform era.
