Sheshanaga

Sheshanaga, also known as Adishesha or simply Shesha, is a prominent figure in Hindu mythology, often depicted as the king of all nagas (serpents). He is primarily associated with Lord Vishnu, whom he serves in various capacities. Sheshanaga is famously known as the couch upon which Lord Vishnu rests, floating in the cosmic ocean of milk, known as Kshira Sagara. This posture symbolizes Vishnu's eternal repose and his role as the preserver of the universe.

In many Puranic narratives, Sheshanaga is credited with holding all the planets of the universe upon his hoods. His immense size and power are emphasized, reflecting his divine nature and cosmic significance. He is often described as having multiple heads, typically a thousand, each capable of singing the glories of Vishnu. This imagery highlights his boundless devotion and his eternal service to the supreme deity.

Sheshanaga is also believed to be an avatar of Lord Shiva in some traditions, signifying his multifaceted role within the Hindu pantheon. His connection to creation and destruction, as well as his role as a cosmic foundation, makes him a powerful and revered deity. The serpent motif itself is deeply symbolic in Hinduism, often representing eternity, rebirth, and the primal energy of the universe. Sheshanaga embodies these qualities in their most supreme form.
