Shchedry

Shchedry is a traditional Ukrainian and Belarusian folk custom observed on the evening of January 13th, the eve of Saint Basil's Day, which is New Year's Day in the Julian calendar. The word "shchedry" translates to "generous" or "bountiful," reflecting the spirit of the occasion.

The custom involves groups of young people, usually girls and boys, going from house to house in their villages. They are often dressed in traditional costumes and carry symbolic items like a decorated hoop with ribbons or a star. They sing "shchedrivky," which are festive songs wishing the hosts good health, prosperity, and a bountiful harvest for the coming year. These songs are typically upbeat and cheerful.

In return for their songs and good wishes, the performers are traditionally given treats such as food, sweets, or small sums of money by the homeowners. This exchange is a demonstration of hospitality and generosity. The shchedry festivities are meant to bring good luck and happiness to the households visited.
