Sharapova, full name Maria Yuryevna Sharapova, is a Russian-born American former professional tennis player who rose to international prominence in the mid-2000s. Born April 22, 1987, in Nyagan, Russia, she moved to the United States to train at a young age. She won four Grand Slam singles titles — Wimbledon in 2004, the US Open in 2006, the Australian Open in 2008, and the French Open in 2012 — and captured the gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, giving her a career Golden Slam. She reached the world No. 1 ranking in 2005 and held the top spot during multiple periods.
