Shantang

Shantang, or Shantang Street (山塘街), is a historic pedestrian street and water-town area in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China. It runs along the Shantang River and forms part of Suzhou’s ancient canal network, located in the eastern part of the old city within Gusu District. The district is known for its traditional Jiangnan architecture, narrow lanes, stone bridges, and waterside houses with white walls and dark tiled roofs.

The area traces its origins to the Song dynasty and grew into a bustling commercial hub during the Ming and Qing dynasties, with merchants, teahouses, theaters, and river ferries serving residents and travelers. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Shantang Street underwent conservation and restoration efforts to preserve its historic structures while integrating modern amenities for visitors.

Today, visitors stroll along a roughly mile-long pedestrian lane lined with preserved façades, cross stone bridges, and watch boats glide along the canal. The street hosts shops selling traditional crafts, snacks, and souvenirs, and some historic buildings house small museums or cultural performances.
