Jiangsu

Jiangsu is a coastal province in eastern China, located in the Yangtze River Delta. It is bordered by Shandong to the north, Anhui to the west, Zhejiang to the south, and the East China Sea to the east. The provincial capital is Nanjing, a city with centuries of political and cultural significance. Other major cities include Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Yangzhou, Nantong, Zhenjiang, and Xuzhou. The Yangtze River traverses the province and the Grand Canal historic waterway links regional economies; ferries and inland waterways remain important for transport and irrigation. The terrain is largely flat to gently rolling, with fertile plains and a long coastline in the east.

Economically, Jiangsu is one of China’s most developed and productive regions. It has a sizable manufacturing base—electronics, automotive, chemicals, shipbuilding—and a large services sector. The province contributes a substantial share to national output and exports. Its transport network is highly developed, featuring extensive expressways and high-speed rail; major ports are located at Lianyungang in the north and Nantong along the coast, with Nanjing serving as a key river port hub.

Culturally, Jiangsu is part of the Jiangnan region, renowned for its classical gardens in Suzhou and a long tradition of literature and the arts. The province is also a center for higher education and research, hosting institutions such as Nanjing University and Southeast University. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot summers and cool, wet winters influenced by the East Asian monsoon.
