Shabak

Shabak, commonly known as Shin Bet, is Israel’s internal security service. In English, it is referred to as the Israel Security Agency (ISA). It is part of the Israeli Intelligence Community, alongside Mossad (foreign intelligence) and Aman (military intelligence). The agency’s core responsibilities cover internal security, counterterrorism, and counterintelligence within Israel and, at times, in Israeli-occupied territories.

The agency traces its activities to the early years of the state and has evolved through multiple reorganizations. Shabak operates under the authority of the Prime Minister’s Office and is guided by Security Cabinet decisions, with oversight and parliamentary involvement varying in transparency. Its mandate includes preventing terrorist attacks, protecting state security, safeguarding critical infrastructure, and countering espionage. It conducts human intelligence, covert operations, arrests, and investigations, and it coordinates with police and other security agencies to secure public safety and political stability.

Organizationally, Shabak is typically organized into divisions focused on counterterrorism, counterintelligence, and intelligence analysis, employing a mix of undercover operatives, informants, and technical collection methods. The agency’s work frequently involves sensitive procedures and has been the subject of public debate and criticism, including discussions about detainee interrogations and privacy rights. Proponents emphasize its role in preventing violence; critics urge greater transparency and stronger adherence to legal and human rights standards.
