The term underscores that certain aspects of a system do not apply universally but depend on one or more settings.

In practice, settingspecific design means that features react to configuration values, such as deployment environment (production, staging, or test), user preferences, locale, accessibility options, or device capabilities. Examples include a reports module that formats numbers by locale, a feature enabled only when a feature flag is active, or a UI layout that adapts to high-contrast mode.

Implementation often relies on configuration-driven code, metadata annotations, or runtime feature toggles. Techniques include conditional logic based on settings, dependency injection guided by configuration, and configuration files or environment variables that influence behavior.

Benefits include improved flexibility and targeted functionality, enabling reuse across contexts. Drawbacks can include increased complexity, higher testing requirements, and potential ambiguity if settings and behavior are not well documented or standardized.
