Servoactuated

Servoactuated refers to any mechanism whose motion is controlled by a servo, a device that combines a motor with a feedback sensor in a closed-loop arrangement to achieve precise control of position, velocity, or torque. In a servoactuated system, a controller issues a command signal to a servo amplifier, the amplifier drives the motor, and feedback from a sensor is used to minimize the error between the actual state and the commanded state.

Typical components include a servo motor (often brushless DC or AC servo), an encoder or resolver for feedback, a servo drive or amplifier, and a control system such as a microcontroller or programmable logic controller. The control loop continuously compares the desired value with the measured value and adjusts torque or speed to drive the error toward zero.

Common control modes are position servoactuation, velocity servoactuation, and torque servoactuation. In position mode the goal is a precise final angle or linear position; in velocity mode the target is a speed; in torque mode the target is a commanded torque. The result is high-precision, repeatable motion with fast dynamic response.

Applications span robotics, CNC machinery, precision positioning stages, aerospace actuators, and automated valves or dampers. In motion systems, servoactuation is valued for high accuracy, repeatability, and controllable stiffness, as well as good disturbance rejection and easy integration with digital control systems.

Advantages include precise tracking, high bandwidth, and compatibility with modern control architectures. Drawbacks include higher cost and complexity, the need for regular calibration and maintenance, and potential sensitivity to mechanical backlash, wear, and sensor drift in challenging environments.
