Serampore

Serampore is a municipal town in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, India. It lies on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, opposite Chandannagar, and forms part of the Kolkata metropolitan region. The town has a long history linked to European colonial presence and to the development of higher education in Bengal.

History: The area began as Frederiksnagore, a Danish trading post established along the Hooghly in the late 17th century. It grew into a colonial town with administrative and commercial functions. In 1845 the Danish government ceded Frederiksnagore to the British, after which the settlement was renamed Serampore. During the colonial era it remained an important river port and trading center, and several colonial-era structures survive along the riverfront.

Education and culture: Serampore is home to Serampore College, founded in 1818 by Baptist missionaries William Carey, Joshua Marshman and William Ward. The college is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Asia and has played a significant role in the region’s intellectual and religious history. Its enduring presence has made Serampore a notable center for learning in Bengal.

Landmarks and economy: The town retains a number of colonial-era buildings along the riverfront, reflecting Danish and British influence. Its economy comprises small-scale industries, wholesale markets, and services, with education and healthcare supported by local institutions and infrastructure.

Transportation and administration: Serampore is the administrative headquarters of the Serampore Municipality in Hooghly district. It is served by the Howrah–Bardhaman Main Line, with Serampore railway station providing rail links to Howrah, Kolkata and beyond, and it is connected by road to Kolkata and other towns in the district.
