Sensorypoetics

Sensorypoetics is a field within literary studies and poetics that analyzes how poetry engages the senses. It focuses on how poems evoke auditory, visual, tactile, olfactory, and gustatory impressions through word choice, sound patterns, imagery, and formal arrangement, and how these sensory effects contribute to meaning and affect.

Discussions of sensory poetics cover techniques such as vivid sensory imagery, synesthesia (referencing one sense to describe another), onomatopoeia and acoustic patterns, line breaks and typography that mimic textures, and the use of concrete materials or environments to ground perception. It often intersects with sound studies, ecocriticism, and experimental poetics.

Historically, sensory-focused poetics have appeared in modern and contemporary poetry and have been discussed by critics seeking to foreground experiential reading. The term may be used differently across scholars, sometimes emphasizing phenomenological approaches that analyze perception as a readerly event.
