Sendagi

Sendagi is a district in the Bunkyō ward of Tokyo, Japan. It is part of the historic Yanesen neighborhood, together with Yanaka in Taitō and Nezu in Bunkyō, an area celebrated for its preserved street layouts and traditional architecture.

Sendagi lies in northern central Tokyo and is known for low-rise residential blocks, narrow lanes, and small shops. Its streets retain an Edo- and early-Showa-era atmosphere, with wooden houses, stone walls, and neighborhood temples and shrines that contribute to a quiet, walkable urban fabric. The district is commonly explored by visitors seeking a glimpse of old Tokyo alongside nearby districts such as Yanaka and Nezu.

Historically, the area developed as a residential and mercantile enclave during the Edo period. Through the Meiji and Taisho eras and into the postwar period, it retained much of its intimate scale, giving the Yanesen area its distinctive character.

Sendagi is primarily residential and modestly commercial, with a concentration of family-run shops and eateries. It is served by local bus routes and sits within convenient reach of railway and subway access in neighboring districts, making it accessible for both residents and visitors.
