Seminomas are a type of germ cell tumor that originate in the testicles. They are the most common type of testicular cancer, accounting for about half of all cases. Seminomas typically occur in men between the ages of 15 and 45. They tend to grow slowly and can often be cured with treatment.

The exact cause of seminomas is unknown, but several risk factors have been identified. These include cryptorchidism (undescended testicles), a family history of testicular cancer, and a previous history of testicular cancer in one testicle. Men with these risk factors are more likely to develop a seminoma.

Symptoms of seminoma can include a painless lump or swelling in the testicle, a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum, or a dull ache in the lower abdomen or groin. In some cases, seminomas can produce hormones that lead to symptoms such as breast tenderness or growth.

Diagnosis of seminoma typically involves a physical examination, ultrasound of the testicle, and blood tests to check for tumor markers. A biopsy of the suspicious area may also be performed.

Treatment for seminoma depends on the stage of the cancer. Options include surgery to remove the affected testicle (orchiectomy), radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Seminomas are generally very responsive to radiation therapy and chemotherapy, and the cure rate is high, especially when detected early.
