Sekundist

Sekundist is a rarely used English term referring to a person who serves as a sekund in a duel—an assistant and mediator appointed by one of the duelists to oversee terms, safety, and fairness. The word appears primarily in historical discussions and in some fictional or role-playing contexts, where it denotes the role of a second who represents a duelist’s interests.

In traditional dueling practice, each participant selected a trusted confidant to act on their behalf. The sekund’s duties included inspecting weapons, enforcing agreed rules, conveying terms, and intervening to prevent escalation or deceit. Seconds could arrange the time and place of the encounter, ensure weapons and ammunition met the agreed standards, and mediate any disputes about procedure or honor.

The term sekundist is most commonly encountered in historical narratives, fantasy or steampunk fiction, and in some hobbyist discussions about dueling etiquette. It is not widely used in contemporary English outside these niches. In many languages and in broader historical writing, similar roles are described with terms such as second or Sekundant.
