Sehingga

Sehingga is a conjunction and adverb used in Malay and Indonesian to indicate result, consequence, or extent. It connects a preceding clause to a following clause in a way that shows what happens as a effect of the preceding action, or the degree to which something occurs. Depending on context, Sehingga can be translated as thus, so that, to the extent that, or even until.

In usage, Sehingga typically appears to express outcomes or boundaries. For example: Hujan lebat sehingga jalan ditutup. This means “The heavy rain was such that the road was closed” or more naturally, “The heavy rain caused the road to be closed.” Another example: Dia bekerja keras sehingga lulus ujian. This can be rendered as “He worked hard, so that he passed the exam.” A sentence like Harga barang naik terlalu cepat sehingga sulit bagi banyak keluarga illustrates a degree of effect: “Prices rose too quickly, making it difficult for many families.”

Sehingga is common in formal and written Malay and Indonesian, and it is used in everyday language as well, though speakers may choose simpler sentences in casual conversation. It is distinct from other connectors that express time or simple consequence; for time, speakers may use hingga or sampai.
