Seguirae

Seguirae is a city-state and maritime republic in the Verdant Archipelago, a cluster of islands off the western coast of the continent of Alaris on the planet Nyr. It functions as a regional center for trade, culture, and maritime technology in the archipelago.

The name Seguirae appears in early records from the Sea Chronicles; scholars propose it derives from Seguiri, the islanders’ language, meaning “watchers” or “keepers.” The term is commonly used to refer to the people and to the political tradition of the city-state.

Geographically, the archipelago features coral reefs, mangroves, and sheltered harbors; the climate is temperate with dry summers. The islands are linked by causeways and seasonal ferries, with several protected bays that support fishing and shipbuilding.

Traditionally a loose federation of trading clans, Seguirae gained de facto independence in the mid-14th century and formal independence in 1456 after a civil dispute. Since then it has maintained autonomy while preserving ties with regional partners, including defense pacts and economic accords.

Government is organized around a General Council of 64 members elected every four years; the executive is the Primarch, who serves as head of government and commander of defense. A ceremonial president acts as head of state. The political system emphasizes merchant-centered policymaking, maritime security, and judicial independence.

Economy centers on maritime trades: shipbuilding, fishing, pearl diving, and controlled tourism. Environmental measures protect reefs, and laws regulate fishing quotas and port operations. The culture blends seafaring traditions with urban arts, and the Festival of Lanterns is a major annual event drawing visitors from across the archipelago.

The University of Seguirae, founded in 1823, and the Coral Archive are prominent institutions; the Old Harbor and the Lighthouse of Neris are notable landmarks. As of the latest census, Seguirae has about 210,000 residents; the population is linguistically diverse, with Seguiri as the dominant language and Alarin as a commonly used second language.
