Sedumarten

Sedumarten, or Sedum species, refer to a diverse group of flowering plants in the Crassulaceae family, commonly known as stonecrops. The genus Sedum comprises hundreds of species with a wide range of forms, from low-growing mats to upright shrubs. They are succulents adapted to dry, rocky habitats and are distributed across temperate regions of the northern hemisphere and in some subtropical areas.

Most Sedum have fleshy leaves that store water and employ CAM photosynthesis. Their inflorescences are typically terminal clusters of small star-shaped flowers that can be yellow, pink, orange, red, or white. Flowering often occurs in summer and into autumn, attracting bees and other pollinators.

Cultivation and horticulture: Sedumarten are popular in rock gardens, alpine gardens, and as ground cover or container plants. They prefer sunny conditions and well-drained soil, and are generally drought-tolerant. Overwatering or poorly drained substrates can lead to root rot. Hardiness varies widely among species, with many tolerating cold winters. Propagation is easy by stem or leaf cuttings, division, or seeds.

Taxonomy and classification: The taxonomy of Sedum has evolved over time. Sedum is placed in the Crassulaceae family within the order Saxifragales. Because the genus is large and diverse, some classifications subdivide it into subgenera or related groups, and the number of recognized species can differ between authorities.

Ecology and use: In natural habitats, Sedum species contribute to soil stabilization on slopes and provide ground cover in harsh climates. In gardens, they offer seasonal color with low maintenance, and many cultivars are selected for specific sizes, leaf shapes, and flower colors.
