Scriptoriums
Scriptoriums are rooms or workshops dedicated to the copying, preparation, and illumination of manuscripts, historically located in monasteries, abbeys, or religious houses, and occasionally in secular settings. The term comes from the Latin scriptorium, “a place for writing.” In modern usage, the word is often used to refer to both historical manuscript centers and contemporary studios devoted to calligraphy or manuscript production. The plural form scriptoriums is sometimes used, though scriptoria is the more common historical plural.
