Scopegeography is an emerging conceptual field that focuses on the geographic scope of phenomena, including spatial extent, temporal constraints, and boundary definitions. It emphasizes how choices about the size, shape, and delimitation of study areas influence interpretation, modeling, and policy outcomes. By foregrounding scope, researchers seek to understand when conclusions generalize across contexts and when they remain contingent on the geographic frame of reference.

Although not yet standardized as a single discipline, scopegeography appears in discussions across geography, urban studies, epidemiology, and environmental science. Proponents argue that explicit attention to scope improves data comparability, transferability of results, and the ability to diagnose boundary- and scale-related biases in analyses.

Core concepts include spatial extent and scale, boundary delineation, and the sensitivity of results to the choice of study area. It also engages with the modifiable areal unit problem, spatial aggregational effects, and multi-scale perspectives that reveal how phenomena behave differently at local, regional, and global levels.

Methodologically, scopegeography relies on geographic information systems, multi-scale modeling, sensitivity analysis across extents, and explicit testing of alternative boundaries. It supports transparent reporting of how different scopes affect results and encourages the use of nested or hierarchical analyses to compare patterns at multiple levels.

Applications span urban planning, resource management, public health, environmental risk assessment, and market research, where understanding the geographic scope clarifies limits to generalization and informs decisions about data collection, policy design, and intervention targeting.

Challenges include a lack of consensus on terminology, potential confusion with related concepts in geography, and the risk of over-emphasizing scale at the expense of mechanisms. Ongoing work aims to establish clearer definitions, standard methodologies, and benchmarks for scope-aware research.
