Schottkyrajapinta, also known as a Schottky junction, is a semiconductor-metal junction. It is formed when a metal is brought into intimate contact with a semiconductor material. Unlike a p-n junction, which involves two different types of semiconductor material, a Schottky junction involves a metal and a semiconductor. This interface exhibits rectifying properties, meaning it allows current to flow more easily in one direction than the other, similar to a diode.

The behavior of a Schottky junction is governed by the difference in the work functions of the metal and the semiconductor. The work function is the minimum thermodynamic work of free electrons to remove an electron from a solid to a point in the vacuum immediately outside the solid surface. When a metal and a semiconductor are brought into contact, electrons will flow from the material with the lower work function to the material with the higher work function until their Fermi levels align. This charge transfer creates a depletion region at the interface.

Schottky diodes, which are devices that utilize this junction, offer several advantages over traditional p-n junction diodes. They typically have a lower forward voltage drop, which leads to reduced power loss and increased efficiency, especially in low-voltage applications. They also exhibit faster switching speeds due to a smaller stored charge in the depletion region, making them suitable for high-frequency applications like radio frequency mixers and detectors. However, they generally have a lower reverse breakdown voltage compared to p-n diodes. Schottky junctions are fundamental components in many electronic circuits and devices.
