Schattenzonen

Schattenzonen is a German term used to describe areas that receive little or no direct sunlight due to shading by objects such as trees, buildings, or terrain. The word combines Schatten (shadow) and Zonen (zones). It is a cross-disciplinary concept rather than a single standardized category, and its boundaries shift with time of day, season, and perspective.

In ecology and forestry, Schattenzonen denote understory habitats where light is scarce. They house shade-tolerant plants, mosses, and rich microbial communities, and they influence seedling establishment, nutrient cycling, and microclimate. The size and character of Schattenzonen depend on canopy density, leafing, and terrain.
