Savityötä, often translated as pottery or ceramics, refers to the art and craft of creating objects from clay. This practice has a long and diverse history, dating back thousands of years to the earliest human civilizations. The fundamental process involves shaping pliable clay, which is then hardened through a firing process in a kiln.

The raw material, clay, is a natural earth material composed of fine-grained minerals. Its plasticity when wet allows it to be molded into various forms, while its ability to harden when dried and fired makes it a durable medium. Techniques for shaping clay are numerous, including hand-building methods like coiling, pinching, and slab construction, as well as the use of a potter's wheel for more symmetrical forms.

Once shaped and dried, the clay undergoes firing. This high-temperature process transforms the clay into a ceramic material, making it permanent and strong. Firing can also be used to mature glazes, which are glassy coatings applied to the surface of the pottery to add color, texture, and waterproofness.
