Savityötekniikat refer to the various methods and processes used in working with clay to create functional or artistic objects. These techniques have been developed and refined over millennia, forming the foundation of ceramic art and pottery. The choice of technique often depends on the type of clay, the desired outcome, and the tools available.

One of the most fundamental techniques is hand-building. This encompasses pinching, where clay is shaped by squeezing it between the thumb and fingers, coiling, where long ropes of clay are stacked and joined to form walls, and slab building, which involves joining flattened sheets of clay. These methods allow for great control and are suitable for creating intricate or irregular forms.

Another widely used technique is pottery wheel throwing. This method involves centering a lump of clay on a spinning wheel and using centrifugal force and hand pressure to shape it into symmetrical forms like bowls, vases, and plates. This technique requires significant practice and skill to master.

After forming, the clay object typically undergoes a drying process to remove moisture. Once dry, it is often fired in a kiln at high temperatures. This firing process transforms the fragile clay into a durable ceramic material. Further decorative techniques, such as glazing, slip decoration, or carving, can be applied before or between firings to enhance the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the ceramic piece.
