Saumakäsittelyt refer to the various methods and techniques used to finish and protect seams in fabric construction. These processes are crucial for enhancing the durability, appearance, and comfort of garments and other textile products. Different types of seams require specific treatments to prevent fraying, add strength, and ensure a smooth finish.

Common saumakäsittelyt include overlocking, also known as serging, which uses a special sewing machine to trim, sew, and overcast the fabric edge simultaneously. This method is widely used for knit fabrics and to finish raw edges in woven materials. Another technique is zigzag stitching, which can be applied to prevent fraying or to join two pieces of fabric with an elastic seam. Flat-felled seams are a very strong and durable type of seam where the raw edges are enclosed within the seam itself, often used in workwear and denim. French seams are a decorative and neat method where the raw edges are enclosed in two stages, creating a clean finish on both the inside and outside of the garment. Bias binding is used to finish curved or straight edges, often for neckline or hem finishing, by encasing the raw edge with a strip of bias tape.
