Sanmachi

Sanmachi refers to a traditional shopping street in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. It is comprised of three distinct areas: Ichinomachi, Ninomachi, and Sannomachi. These streets are characterized by their well-preserved Edo-period architecture, featuring wooden buildings with latticed windows and dark timber facades. Historically, this area was a prosperous merchant district, and many of the buildings now house souvenir shops, craft stores, sake breweries, and cafes.
