Sammutusvälit

Sammutusvälit, known in English as "fire breaks" or "fire guards," are cleared or managed areas of land designed to prevent or slow the spread of wildfires. These breaks are established by removing or reducing flammable vegetation such as trees, shrubs, and dry grasses. The width and effectiveness of a sammutusväli depend on factors like the fuel type, topography, and anticipated fire behavior.

There are several types of sammutusvälit. Natural fire breaks utilize existing features like rivers, lakes, rock formations, or bare soil that naturally lack continuous fuel. Artificial fire breaks are intentionally created through human intervention, involving activities like mowing, plowing, or the removal of vegetation down to mineral soil. Managed fuel breaks involve thinning dense vegetation and reducing the overall fuel load to decrease fire intensity rather than creating a completely bare strip.

The primary purpose of sammutusvälit is to act as a control line during a wildfire. Firefighting crews can use these cleared areas to create a safe zone from which to attack a fire, or to stop its advance by removing the fuel it needs to spread. They can also be used proactively to protect structures, communities, or critical infrastructure from encroaching flames.
