Samhällsinlärning, often translated as social learning, is a theory that describes how people learn by observing, imitating, and modeling others' behaviors, attitudes, and emotional reactions. It suggests that learning is a cognitive process that takes place in a social context.

Bandura's social cognitive theory emphasizes the reciprocal interaction between an individual's behavior, their cognitive processes, and the environment. He proposed that learning occurs through observation, imitation, and modeling. This means that individuals learn by watching others, seeing the consequences of their actions, and then deciding whether to adopt those behaviors themselves.

The process of social learning involves several components. First, there is attention, where the learner must pay attention to the model. Second, retention is necessary, meaning the learner must be able to remember the observed behavior. Third, reproduction allows the learner to physically or mentally replicate the behavior. Finally, motivation is crucial; the learner must have a reason or incentive to imitate the behavior, which is often influenced by observing the consequences the model experiences (reinforcement or punishment).
