Sagrantino

Sagrantino is a red wine grape variety native to Umbria in central Italy, most closely linked with the Montefalco area. The grape is known for thick skins and very high tannin potential, which can produce deeply colored wines that reward long aging. It is used to make both dry red wines and sweeter, passito-style wines in the region.

The dry expression, commonly labeled Montefalco Sagrantino, is a full-bodied red wine characterized by intense structure and substantial tannins. These wines typically require extended aging to soften and to develop complexity, and they are often regarded as ageworthy, capable of evolving over many years or decades. A sweeter style, Sagrantino di Montefalco Passito, is produced from partially dried grapes, concentrating sugars and flavors to yield a rich, raisiny dessert wine with pronounced sweetness and alcohol.

Viticulture and terroir play important roles in Sagrantino. The grape thrives in Umbria’s clay-limestone soils and benefits from the region’s climate, which features diurnal temperature variation that helps preserve acidity while enabling full ripening. Yields are usually kept low to concentrate flavor, and aging—often in oak—contributes to the wine’s texture and complexity.

Flavor and pairing notes commonly include dark fruit such as blackberry and plum, along with chocolate, tobacco, and earthy undertones. Dry Sagrantino wines pair well with roasted and grilled red meats, game, and aged cheeses, while the Passito can accompany desserts or strong cheeses in smaller portions.
