STIBMIVB

STIB-MIVB, or STIB-MIVB (Société des Transports Intercommunaux de Bruxelles / Maatschappij Voor Intercommunaal Vervoer te Brussel), is the public transport operator responsible for most urban transport in the Brussels-Capital Region, Belgium. The agency operates the metropolitan network that includes the Brussels Metro, tram, and bus services, and serves as the main organizer of day-to-day service and system maintenance in the region.

Owned by the Brussels-Capital Region, STIB-MIVB is governed by a regional public authority that sets policy and funding, while the company staff plan routes, manage fleets, and provide customer services. The network comprises metro lines that run underground in central areas and above ground in the outskirts, extensive tram routes across the city, and a comprehensive bus network covering the region and surrounding municipalities. Night transit is provided on select lines during weekends.

Ticketing and fares are issued through the MOBIB contactless smart card, with options to load value or purchase passes; contactless bank cards and mobile payments are also supported on many services. STIB-MIVB participates in regional and national transport planning and coordinates with other operators for integrated scheduling and fare integration, enabling transfers across modes and neighboring systems.

In addition to service delivery, STIB-MIVB runs modernization programs to renew rolling stock, improve accessibility with low-floor vehicles, and extend the network with planned expansions. It remains the core public transit provider in Brussels, serving millions of riders annually and contributing to the region’s mobility and environmental objectives.
