SNkäyrinä is a term of Finnish origin that translates roughly to "SN curve" or "SN diagram." It refers to a graphical representation used in materials science and engineering to depict the relationship between stress and the number of cycles a material can withstand before failure under repeated loading. This type of diagram is crucial for understanding fatigue, a phenomenon where materials fail at stress levels significantly lower than their static tensile strength due to cyclic loading.

The horizontal axis of an SNkäyrinä typically represents the number of cycles to failure, often plotted on a logarithmic scale. The vertical axis represents the stress amplitude or maximum stress applied during each cycle. As the stress level decreases, the number of cycles a material can endure before failure generally increases. For some materials, particularly certain steels, there is a stress level below which the material can theoretically withstand an infinite number of cycles; this is known as the fatigue limit or endurance limit. For other materials, like aluminum alloys, a true fatigue limit may not exist, and the curve continues to descend indefinitely, indicating a finite fatigue life even at very low stress levels.
