SIresta

SIresta is an open-standard framework designed to coordinate and monitor ecosystem restoration initiatives. It provides a common structure for planning, execution, and reporting across diverse projects, aiming to improve transparency, interoperability, and impact assessment. SIresta stands for System for Integrated Restoration, Evaluation, Standards, and Tracking Alliance.

The project originated through a collaboration of universities, non-governmental organizations, and municipal agencies in the early 2010s, with a formal consortium established in 2016. Its core idea is to offer a unified data schema, an interoperable software platform, and a governance model that aligns planning, funding, and reporting across stakeholders. The framework is designed to support both large-scale restoration programs and community-led efforts.

Key components include a data standard for restoration metrics, a project registry, a modular analytics dashboard, and a funding-tracking module. The data standard covers ecological outcomes, social benefits, and cost indicators, enabling comparability across projects. The registry and dashboard facilitate project coordination, progress monitoring, and evidence-based decision-making. The funding module tracks resources and allocates grants in line with predefined restoration targets.

Adoption has grown among local and regional authorities, research groups, and conservation organizations, with pilots showing improved transparency, collaboration, and cost-efficiency. Critics note challenges related to data quality, governance, and equitable access, particularly for smaller communities or regions with limited technical capacity. SIresta remains under active development, with work on multilingual support, privacy protections, and integration with satellite data and field sensors.
