SFSmerkinnän

SFSmerkinnän, commonly referred to as the SFS mark, is a conformity symbol issued by the Finnish Standards Association SFS ry. The mark indicates that a product or service complies with applicable Finnish standards or with specific SFS standards adopted into national regulations. The purpose is to provide assurance of quality, safety and reliability for consumers and authorities, and to facilitate market access in Finland.

Scope and use. The SFS mark may be applied to a range of products and services, including consumer goods, building materials, electrical equipment, measuring instruments, and laboratory or testing services, where national standards or SFS schemes apply. In many cases it is voluntary, but certain procurement contracts or sectoral regulations may require SFS certification. The mark is typically displayed on product labels, packaging, or accompanying documentation, along with a certificate or registration number.

Certification process. Manufacturers or importers seeking the SFS mark submit product documentation and testing results to an SFS-authorized certification body. The product is assessed against relevant standards, and may involve product testing, production controls, and quality management reviews. If compliance is demonstrated, the organization receives authorisation to use the SFS mark and a certificate number; the mark is subject to periodic surveillance audits to maintain eligibility.

Relation to other marks. The SFS mark is distinct from the CE mark used for EU-wide conformity. CE indicates conformity with applicable EU directives and regulations; SFS signifies adherence to Finnish standards under SFS schemes. In some cases, products may bear both marks.

Governance. SFS ry coordinates standardization in Finland and administers the SFS conformity scheme, including licensing and enforcement of the SFS mark. The requirements, symbols, and conditions for use are outlined in SFS guidelines and product-specific standards.
