SDIbaserad

SDIbaserad (SDI-based) is a term used to describe systems, applications, or processes that are built on or rely on a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI). An SDI is a framework that coordinates geospatial data, services, metadata, and governance to enable discovery, access, and reuse of geographic information across organizations and sectors. An SDI typically integrates data from multiple sources and makes it possible to combine, visualize, and analyse geographic information through standardized interfaces.

Core characteristics of SDI-based solutions include adherence to open standards and interoperable services, such as the OGC Web Map Service (WMS), Web Feature Service (WFS), and Web Map Tile Service (WMTS); metadata and data catalogs conforming to ISO 19115/19139; and discovery mechanisms like Catalogue Service for the Web (CSW). The architecture often follows service-oriented or microservices patterns, with data layers published as services and access controlled by governance policies. Data quality, provenance, and licensing are important considerations, as are security and privacy concerns when sharing geospatial information.

Benefits of SDI-based systems include improved data interoperability, reduced duplication of effort, faster data sharing across agencies, and better support for planning, disaster response, and environmental monitoring. Challenges can include establishing and maintaining governance, ensuring data quality and currency, handling licensing, and addressing technical complexity. In practice, SDI-based solutions are used in municipal planning portals, national geospatial infrastructures, and cross-border environmental or emergency management applications.
