SCADA servers are central components of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems. They host the SCADA software that interfaces with field devices to monitor and control industrial processes. The server collects real-time telemetry from programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and remote terminal units (RTUs), stores historical data in a historian database, and provides an operator interface for monitoring, alarming, and issuing control commands.

Architecture and components typically place SCADA servers within a layered OT network. They connect to PLCs/RTUs via plant networks and to engineering workstations and HMIs. Data flows from field devices to the SCADA server, where operators view dashboards, trends, and alarms. The system often integrates with historians, data warehouses, and enterprise systems such as MES or ERP. Common communication protocols include Modbus, DNP3, IEC 60870-5, and OPC UA for data exchange.

Deployment models vary. SCADA servers can be deployed on-premises, in the cloud, or in hybrid configurations. High availability is commonly achieved through redundant servers, clustering, virtualization, and robust disaster recovery planning. Some implementations use edge computing to reduce latency and improve resilience.

Security and reliability are essential for SCADA servers due to their role in critical infrastructure. Best practices include network segmentation, strict access control and MFA, secure communications (TLS), regular patching, continuous monitoring, and incident response planning. Compliance standards and industry guidance—such as IEC 62443 and sector-specific requirements—often inform hardening and auditing procedures.

Industry scope and usage span utilities (electric, water), manufacturing, oil and gas, and transportation. SCADA servers enable operators to supervise processes, trigger alarms, and log data for analysis, optimization, and reporting.
