SBASverkot

SBASverkot is a term found in some Swedish-language sources that refers to the set of components and tools that support Satellite-Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS). It is not an official designation in international aviation or GNSS literature, and its usage varies by author. In general, SBAS refers to a system that augments global navigation satellite systems with additional corrections and integrity information to improve positioning accuracy and reliability over a wide area.

An SBASverkot comprises a distributed ground network, a master control facility, an uplink segment, and user receivers. The ground network includes reference stations that monitor GNSS satellite signals and generate corrections. The master control facility computes quality and integrity parameters and prepares navigation messages. The uplink segment transmits these corrections and integrity data to geostationary satellites, whose broadcast messages are then received by SBAS-enabled users on the ground and in aircraft.

Function and performance: SBAS corrections typically improve horizontal and vertical positioning to the meter level and provide integrity information to help users assess the trustworthiness of the data. Coverage depends on regional implementation, including the density of reference stations and the visibility of geostationary satellites. Performance is strongest in areas with robust ground networks and favorable satellite geometry, and may be limited by ionospheric conditions, receiver quality, and potential service outages.

Examples and adoption: Globally recognized SBAS implementations include the US WAAS, European EGNOS, Indian GAGAN, and Japanese MSAS. In civil aviation, SBAS-enabled approaches are used to support precision navigation and efficiency in instrument flight operations.
