SACLer

SACLer is a term used in information technology to describe a person or software component involved in configuring and auditing Windows System Access Control Lists (SACLs). A SACL is part of a security descriptor and specifies which access attempts on an object should be audited and under what conditions.

Definition and scope. In practice, a SACLer may refer to two things: a human administrator whose duties include designing auditing policies for files, registry keys, and other securable objects; or a software tool or library that can read, modify, or analyze SACL entries within security descriptors. SACLs are distinct from DACLs (Discretionary Access Control Lists) and complement them by recording audit events rather than denying or granting access.

Function and implementation. SACL entries can specify auditing for successful and/or failed access attempts by particular principals or groups on specific object types. A SACLer working in an enterprise might implement centralized auditing policies, verify that sensitive objects have appropriate auditing, and troubleshoot audit logs for compliance or investigations. Administrators interact with SACLs via security APIs, PowerShell cmdlets such as Get-Acl and Set-Acl, or dedicated security descriptor editors. In Windows, the security API and related functions support reading and writing SACLs; third‑party tools may provide GUI-based management.

Considerations and governance. Modifying SACLs requires appropriate permissions, and auditing configuration can generate substantial logs that must be managed in accordance with policy and privacy requirements. Proper documentation and change control are important to maintain defensible audit trails.
