S235S275

S235 and S275 are hot-rolled structural steel grades defined in the European standard EN 10025-2. The S denotes structural steel, and the numbers indicate the approximate minimum yield strength in megapascals (MPa): about 235 MPa for S235 and 275 MPa for S275. They are non-alloy steels intended for general structural use and are widely available in rolled shapes, plates, and sections.

Suffixes such as JR, J0, and J2 specify impact toughness with Charpy V-notch testing at different temperatures (JR for ambient, J0 at -20°C, J2 at -40°C). The baseline S235 and S275 grades refer to core mechanical properties, while the suffixes define additional toughness requirements.

Typical mechanical properties (subject to product form and thickness) are roughly: S235 with a minimum yield strength of 235 MPa and tensile strength around 360-510 MPa, with elongation A80 in the order of 26-30%. S275 has a minimum yield strength of 275 MPa and tensile strength around 430-550 MPa, with elongation around 23-28%.

These steels are valued for their weldability and formability rather than high strength or corrosion resistance. They are commonly used in structural frames, beams and columns, bridges, general fabrication, and machinery bases. They are supplied as hot-rolled coil, sheet, plates, bars, and sections.
