Südamekirurgia, also known as cardiac surgery, is the surgical treatment of diseases affecting the heart and its major blood vessels. It is a complex and highly specialized field that involves repairing or replacing damaged heart valves, bypassing blocked coronary arteries, correcting congenital heart defects, and treating other conditions like heart failure and aneurysms.

The most common procedure in cardiac surgery is coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), where blocked arteries are bypassed with healthy blood vessels taken from elsewhere in the body, restoring blood flow to the heart muscle. Heart valve repair or replacement is another frequent surgery, addressing issues with valves that are too narrow (stenosis) or leak (regurgitation). Congenital heart defects, which are abnormalities present at birth, can often be corrected through various surgical techniques.
