Süßwassereis, often translated as freshwater ice, refers to ice that forms on bodies of freshwater such as lakes, rivers, and ponds. Unlike sea ice, which forms on saltwater, Süßwassereis contains very little salt, making it chemically distinct. Its formation is dependent on ambient temperatures dropping below the freezing point of water, which is 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) at standard atmospheric pressure.
