Sähkönhintansa refers to the price of electricity in Finland. This price is influenced by several factors, including the global wholesale electricity market, domestic energy production, weather conditions, and taxation. The wholesale market price, often referred to as the Nord Pool price, is a significant component as it fluctuates based on supply and demand across the Nordic region.

Domestic energy production plays a crucial role. Finland's energy mix includes nuclear power, hydropower, wind power, and biomass, each with varying production costs. Large-scale renewable energy investments, particularly in wind power, have the potential to impact prices, especially when production is high. Conversely, a lack of renewable energy or issues with other power plants can lead to price increases.

Weather conditions have a direct impact. Cold winters increase demand for heating, thus driving up electricity consumption and prices. Similarly, hot summers can boost demand for cooling. Dry periods can reduce hydropower availability, and windless spells can affect wind power generation, both potentially leading to higher prices.

Finally, taxes and transmission fees are added to the base electricity price. These include value-added tax (VAT) and other energy-specific taxes, as well as the cost of transporting electricity from power plants to consumers. Consumers can choose between different electricity contract types, such as fixed-price or variable-price contracts, which affect how they experience price fluctuations. Variable-price contracts often follow the hourly wholesale market price, allowing consumers to potentially benefit from lower prices during off-peak hours.
