Rückstausicherung

Rückstausicherung refers to a device or system installed in a building's drainage system to prevent sewage or wastewater from backing up into the building from the public sewer during periods of heavy rainfall or sewer blockages. This phenomenon is known as a sewer backup or Rückstau. The Rückstausicherung works by automatically closing off the connection to the public sewer when it detects an upward flow of wastewater, thus protecting the building's interior from contamination and damage.

There are several types of Rückstausicherungen, with the most common being mechanical flap valves and motorized automatic valves. Mechanical flap valves consist of a flap that is held open by the normal flow of wastewater towards the sewer. When the flow reverses due to a backup, the pressure of the rising wastewater forces the flap shut. Motorized valves use sensors to detect the reversed flow and then electrically close a valve. Some systems also incorporate alarms to alert occupants of a backup situation. Proper installation and regular maintenance are crucial for the effective operation of any Rückstausicherung. Building codes in many regions mandate the installation of Rückstausicherungen in basements or ground-floor plumbing fixtures that are below the level of the public sewer.
