Rückstausicherungen

Rückstausicherungen, also known as backwater valves or backflow preventers, are devices installed in drainage systems to prevent sewage and wastewater from flowing back into a building or property during periods of heavy rainfall or overloaded sewer lines. These situations, known as a backflow event, can occur when the external sewer system cannot handle the volume of water, causing pressure to build up and force wastewater in the reverse direction.

The primary function of a Rückstausicherung is to create a one-way passage for wastewater. When water flows away from the building, a flap or gate within the device opens to allow passage. However, if the flow reverses, the pressure of the backflowing water forces the flap or gate shut, effectively blocking the entry of sewage into the building's plumbing.

There are several types of Rückstausicherungen, each suited for different applications and levels of protection. Common types include automatic backwater valves, which operate without manual intervention, and manual valves, which require periodic closure by the user. The choice of Rückstausicherung depends on factors such as the building's location, the type of drainage system, and local building codes. Regular maintenance and inspection are crucial to ensure the continued effectiveness of these devices.
