Bones, being dense, absorb more X-rays and appear white on the resulting image, while softer tissues like muscles and organs absorb less and appear in shades of gray. Air-filled spaces, such as the lungs, absorb very little and appear black.

The X-rays that pass through the body are detected by a special film or a digital detector, creating a two-dimensional image. This allows medical professionals to identify abnormalities such as fractures, dislocations, infections, tumors, and foreign objects. The procedure is quick and generally painless. Patients are typically asked to remain still during the exposure to ensure a clear image. Depending on the area being examined, a contrast agent may be administered orally or intravenously to enhance the visibility of specific organs or blood vessels.
